New paintings For more information click here to visit www.jeffRAGLUS.comJeff Raglus is coming to town with his own homegrown version of ‘low-brow’ Pop art! Part ‘naïve’, part ‘surf’, Raglus in fact worked for the Mambo graphics company for most of the nineties.Jeff says he hasn’t had a real ‘job’ since 1985 when he quit his builders’ labourer’s job to join Joe Camilleri’s Black Sorrows. Sometime after this, he joined another band – The Bachelors From Prague. It was during his stint with this band that he started painting.Since then, Raglus has had at least 2 solo shows per year, and been involved in many side graphic adventures. He also designs posters and CD covers (2 of which have won Triple J awards). He has also created a swatch watch (Sydney 2000), designed the sets and costumes for three individual plays for the Arena Theatre Company, and conceived an award winning animation to tell Melbourne kids to ‘Use the Crossing’.The paintings for Low-Brow Show Down were painting over the last year, and part of this show has come straight from The Fremantle Arts Centre where Jeff has just had a show.Jeff describes his paintings as ‘Suburban-Primitive’:“There are two sides to it,” Raglus explains. “One is that my work has a native/primitive element that is in fact actually born from the suburbs, a kind of fake primitivism.“The other side is that I’m fascinated by the fact that we as ‘cultured’ urban dwellers have suppressed our natural, former-primitive selves, but perhaps deep within still wish to be tribal. I like these qualities.”These days, Jeff lives on the Surf coast, and besides painting, plays trumpet in about five different musical line-ups (including Feelin’ Groovies and The Beachniks). His latest band – Fogg – has a debut CD out on the Jazzhead label. Jeff will be bringing some CDs with him to Brisbane.Famous people who own a Raglus:Kelly Slater (world surf champ)John Butler (of the Trio)Paul Kelly (Oz music legend)John Farrar (Olivia Newton-John’s hubby and songwriter)Exhibitions2004 - Low-Down Show Down, Doggett Street Studio, Brisbane2004 - Fremantle Arts Centre2002 - Everyday Daydreams, Doggett Street Studio, Brisbane2002 - Qdos Gallery, Lorne, Victoria2001 - Antipodes Gallery, Sorrento, Victoria2001 - Mario’s Cafe, Fitzroy, Victoria2001 - Ray Hughes Gallery, Sydney2001 - Fun Bags, Doggett Street Studio, Brisbane2000 - Ray Hughes Gallery, Sydney
